- Name: Soapnut
- Scientific Name: Sapindus mukorossi gaertn.
A deciduous tree Leaves compound, alternate, stalked, 15-45 cm long, crowed at the ends of branches; leaflets shortly petioled, alternate or upper nearly opposite, lanceolate, entire. Flowers numerous, small, polygamous, purple or white, ciliated. Fruits fleshy nut, sun glucose, glaucescent, saponaceous, 18.5 cm across and yellow when matured, wrinkled.
Principal Constituents
Saponins are the major active constituent of the fruit pulp. Mukorosside is one of the saponins isolated from the fruit.
Strychnine has relatively more powerful stimulant action on the motor-cells of the central nervous system.
Fruits are expectorant, and used in salivation, chorosis and epilepsy.Soapnuts are used in all kinds of hair washes. It is added to get rich foam and pleasant aroma. Soapnuts are used as detergent for washing cloth before dying.
