Zanthoxylum armatum known in Nepali language as timur belongs to Rutaceae family. It grows throughout Nepal in between 1500-2400m altitude.It is used as medicine as well as spice.Since Z. armatum plant is medicinally important there are large numbers of bioactive compounds are isolated and identified. Different types of chemical constituents such as alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoides, Glycosides, sterols, tannins, ligands, coumarins, amides and essential oils are reported in this plant.
Uses:
.The bark, fruits and seeds of Z. armatum are extensively used in indigenous system of medicine as carminative, stomachic and anthelminthic. The seed and bark are also used as an aromatic tonic in fever, dyspepsia. Because of their deodorant, disinfectant and antiseptic properties, the fruits are used in dental troubles, their lotion for scabies and also used to ward-off houseflies.Besides this it is also used as a flavouring agent in the confectionery industry and in the manufacture of soft drinks.Anti tumour activities, antistress activities, antinflammatory and antioxtidant activities were evaluated in different parts of this plan.Essential oil of Z. armatumpossesses leech repellent activity.
